Digging Season 2012

Good news: digging season is upon us!
Better news:  digging season is (mostly) OVER!

We determined that the ground had sufficiently thawed and dried enough that we could get back to digging out the patio.  Wow, it’s been a long time since we talked about digging.  In case you need a refresher, last April, our backyard looked like this:

And after a full 6 months of digging, it looked like this:

Well, technically we did a little more digging after that.  We dug up the ramp and did a little bit of digging next to the garage.  So last week, after the winter’s freezing and thawing cycle, the future patio looked like this:

We just had a patch to do near the greenhouse and we had to clean up the edges, where some pebbles fell throughout the winter.

 Oh, and by the way, these pictures do not do this project justice.  This patio is enormous.  Krister measured the length of the wall and it came out at a shocking SEVENTY-FIVE FEET long.  Oh, and it’s going to be about 4 feet tall.  Whew.

So, guess what?  We actually finished digging!

Cleaning up the edges was a much bigger project than we imagined.  Here’s a close up on the edges.

We did get a little bit of help with the digging this weekend:

Kidding!  Kasen has at least another month or two before he’s strong enough to use heavy, sharp landscaping equipment.  But a big thanks goes out to Uncle Dan for his help!

We’re happy to report that this weekend, we’re going to start scouting some local stores to find the best product to build our retaining wall.  You know we’ll keep you posted about what we pick and why.  In the meantime, we’re going to continue jumping out of our skin with excitement because:
