Are we there yet?

Believe it or not, we do still work on the patio in the backyard.  We are regularly foiled by Mother Nature (stop raining, please!), but we do spend some time digging most weekends.

We haven’t been updating you because, well, frankly, there are a limited number of times you can hear “and we spent the whole weekend digging and we haven’t even made a dent in the remainder.”  And yet, here we are.

We decided to update you again because this weekend we actually found something interesting: a boulder.  A huge boulder.  Here’s what it looked like once we got it out:

We weren’t sure what to do with that huge boulder (when it was still in-ground), but, in our usual style, we improvised.  We dug around it and wedged it with our pry bar a bunch.  It didn’t budge.  So we were going to leave it there and figure out what to do with it later.  Then, miraculously, Krister was prying some dirt behind The Boulder and it moved.  Just a little, but it definitely moved.  And then Kristin said, “wait!  don’t make it move it too much so I can snap this picture of you”:

Totally awesome.  Anyway, we dug it out a little bit and it popped out.  Krister was pretty much entirely responsible for pulling it out since Kristin couldn’t physically move it.

Krister also removed the laundry line post, which was buried a few feet into the mud:

So, to answer your real question: Are we done yet?  No.  Not yet.   We’ve come a long way, but we’ve still got some digging to do.  We’re getting excited about the prospect of finishing though!

As a reminder, this is what our backyard looked like at the beginning of the summer:

This is what the backyard looked like when we last updated you:

And this is what the backyard looks like now:

We are using that tarp to reduce the amount of rainfall that hits the ground (i.e. hopefully increase the amount of digging we can do because we have fewer rained-out days).

So that’s our update…  hopefully the next update will be entitled “DONE DIGGING”!
